Do you all know that the art of pottery making is still not lost in Singapore?
Many of you who watched the famous Mediacorp series 小娘惹 (Little Nonya) should find everything I'm going to be introducing very familiar. This is because most of the exquisite, vintage looking,  peranakan-style pottery featured in the show came from Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle!
I was very lucky to be brought around the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle for a little media tour and was very intrigued by how this piece of Singapore still remained so rustic and vintage. I, like many of us young Singaporeans, didn't grow up when kampongs were still around so it was truly an eye-opening experience for me.
And of course, what was more intriguing were the thousands of pottery pieces that were on display for customers to purchase!
Apart from their Peranakan pieces (hot-sellers!), Thow Kwang also offers other traditional-style ones ranging from cups, spoons, teapots, vases, plates, etc.
This was probably the highlight of the entire tour because I learnt the most here!
Do you know that Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle has the longest history in Singapore using the Dragon Kiln in creating their pottery pieces?
If you're unaware of what is a Kiln, it is basically this HUGE and long chamber that is used to harden clay. This is the last step in making most of the pottery items you see!
And of course, the Dragon Kiln got its name from the sheer size and length of it. It is as long as a dragon!

We were brought inside the kiln and it was really cool.

The owners of the pottery jungle actually showed us the difference between using the traditional method of "firing" the pottery pieces in the kiln as opposed to using automated machines you find these days.
Pottery made from using the traditional firing method are all unique - you can never find an exact piece at anywhere in the world.
This is because the flames give the pottery pieces a rustic design as seen in the photo below, and how the designs are made will depend on how the flames burn.
The direction, speed, and way the flames burn in the kiln are also unpredictable and uncontrollable.
I felt that this is something really special. And certainly, traditional ways of doing things always give it a greater punch of "flavour" because after all, these pieces are meant to be appreciated!

If you'd like to have a hands-on experience with pottery making, Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle will be conducting a workshop on the 28th June at the price of $35 and $50. Registration opens on the 24th May and 25th May.
