Recess Week Food Hunt Part 1 : Mellben Seafood + Salon Vim Promo for March

Sunday, March 02, 2014

I realized I haven't really had time for a PROPER post since recess week started.
And in the blink of an eye... its Sunday, and recess week is almost over :( Where did all that time go?!
I guess time really flies whenever you're enjoying. Sucks.

Anyhow. I've been enjoying my recess week to the fullest!
Besides being able to resume back to my usual shooting schedule (I stopped shoots for 2 weeks cause of mid terms)
I was able to have time for good sumptuous meals. AHA!
Not one, not two.. but like 30?! Lucky girl is me ^^v

Today i'll be sharing with you a few of the restaurants that I visited (in order) over the past week, and of course... my recommendations and details of each meal!

However due to time and space constraints, i might just split this long post into a few parts because I don't want to bombard you guys with just food alone ><
Especially if you're reading this at night, and feeling a little hungry.
I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT. But then again i can only have myself to blame because whenever im caught in a situation where i'm starving, it's late at night and I am too lazy to get out of bed to grab something to eat.
Then. Someone decides to post super nice food photographs on their Instagram/blog .
*DIES AND ROLLS EYES*
(Clicks on the person's blog link/ IG profile to check it out further)

It's really crazy how my mind rejects the idea of looking at such delish food photographs but yet my stomach tells me it wants to see more of it.
HAHA and yep! I always end up regretting my decision to go ahead to check it out further because i'd spend the rest of the night hugging my growling tummy to sleep. Lol
Anyone with me on this? Ooops/

Anyway, let's get started!

The first place I visited right after I finished my last paper last week was Mellben Seafood Restaurant.
I've read/heard so many reviews and recommendations from that place and I finally tried it!

We ordered 3 crabs : Black Pepper / Butter / Claypot Vermicelli Soup

First up, Black Pepper

It was honestly not too bad, however we felt that for the price that we paid... the crab is way too puny!
The quality of the meat was also really quite bad .
However the taste of it was really pretty fine and coupled with the fact that i've missed Black pepper crabs too much, i shall let the quality of the crab pass.

Butter Crab
This sinful dish is definitely one to try!
Drenched with a really unique butter sauce, it was creamy, rich but surprisingly not "gelat"
I was just this close to drinking the sauce on it's own! Hahaha but yep. Watch the calories and cholesterol guys, 3 crabs in one night is no joke.
Again, crab size was an issue. TOO SMALLLL..

Now it's time for their speciality, the Claypot Vermicelli (Crab Bee Hoon)

The soup was simply devine! It was rich, creamy and the taste of the natural crab's sweetness was totally brought out in there.
Putting the amount of cholestrol this one pot contains aside, i'd say this really lives up to its name.
Only problem is again.... The size of the crab and the quality of the crabs they used.

All of the above crabs had decent tastes to them, but it could have certainly be done better if they used better crabs to cook them instead.
The meat wasn't fresh at all and they were either mushy in there (eew) or they stuck to the shells.
We had a hard time enjoying the crab itself, but rather the sauces and we spent the time licking them off the shells. YUM

oh yes, and if you guys are just thinking of ordering the Claypot Bee Hoon alone, additional soup and noodles are available at the price of $5 and $3 respectively.
Just $8 for that whole bowl of goodness is really worth it, imo!
Considering one crab dish (which is not alot) already costs around $60-$70

Overall, I'd give Mellben Seafood a:
7.5/10
Honestly it could go up to a 8.5 but because of the poor quality crabs of ridiculous sizes (and pretty steep prices), I thought I wouldn't go back anytime soon.

Anyhow, to all you crab lovers out there, give this a try if you haven't!
